Rethinking Interior Design

It’s time to rethink living spaces in every room of your home. Today’s home buyers are requiring more functionality of space in their new homes. Which leaves current homeowners fighting for the same cause. So where does that leave home sellers?  You got it, in the same boat. We are all craving more comfort in a space. Reimagining how a space can fit our current lifestyle is where we start.

Functionality Over Formal

Since the 2020 interior boom, everyone is asking the same question. “If I’m spending more time in this room how can I make it more functional?”  With more people working from home, space is more valuable than ever before. Space sharing between families is not a trend.  But having to piggy back your space with your work or school aged children is becoming a new normal.

How often do we use that formal dining room or that formal living room space? Say bye bye to the formal dining room or formal living room of previous generations. Most homeowners or home buyers are doing away with them. Say hello to the multi-purpose space. Today’s market requires a home office and an extra learning space or nook for children. In fact, we want spaces that we can use and live in, not spaces that collect dust.

Communicate with Color

Spaces and rooms must create a sense of calm, coziness, and joy. With all the surprises 2020 brought, it’s perfect that the Pantone color of the year for 2020 was Blue. Classic Blue 19-4052. Color is a form of communication. Blue is a relaxing color. It also adds depth to a space. If you are spending the majority of your time at home you want your space to be relaxing. In any case, blue also brings a sense of calm, coziness, and joy.

But blues need a balance. Infusing pops of bright colors with blues like golds or yellows work well.  Golds and yellow bring out the cheerfulness and as Marie Kondo would say “sparks joy.”  What’s more, yellow has this power. It doesn’t surprise us that the Panton color of the year for 2021 was Illuminating 13-0647.  And ultimate Gray 17-5104  tied in as a well deserved accent colors too.

Furniture and Natural Elements

Adding durable fabrics that will take a beating because we are home more made the list as well. Leathers, natural elements, reclaimed materials, camels, faux throws, and fluffy blankets. Stone pots and earthy tones made a showing as a way to open up the door to the outside world.  In fact, all these pieces warm a room and add texture. They also bring a relaxed and calm vibe. Fabrics that can wash well paired with comfortable and versatile upholstery.

Storage for Days

Storage options always make the list for must have’s interior design trends. Because no matter how hard we try we are always accumulating “stuff.”  Once your “stuff” gets out of hand your space tends to feel cluttered and messy. Clutter and mess can bring on anxiety. Wicker or rattan baskets bring in another round of earthy elements to a home. Besides, baskets can hold just about anything books, crafts, coupons, mail, shoes, and toys.

Natural Light to the Rescue

Let the Light In. Open those blinds and do away with the heavy curtains. Sheer is where it’s at. There is a recurring theme here with spaces if you haven’t noticed. Natural light makes a space feel more comfortable. Bringing in as much natural light as possible is key.

Research has proven that natural lighting helps people be more productive.  It makes you happier, healthier, and calmer.  Natural light is also helpful for increasing the aesthetics of a space. Architects use natural light to make spaces appear larger.  Light illuminates an interior structure and increase the beauty of a space.

Bring the Outdoors Inside

Plants have a positive effect on our health by purifying the air and releasing oxygen. They also improve our mood while adding splashes of color to your home decor. Indoor plants enhance the overall appearance of a space. They’ve been shown to boost moods, increase creativity, and reduce stress.

Dare We Say Wallpaper?

Unlike the previous wallpaper world from the 60’s and 70’s, wallpaper is making a comeback. Now before you scream at this article, it is coming back in a rather cool way. In brief wallpaper is being used as an accent. Or should we be say statement wall.  These terms are interchangeable. No more are the days of all walls being covered but just one.

Wallpaper is being introduced with lively patterns and bold colors. Colors infuse the home with excitement and personality. Creating a visual wall that screams your personality is a big design trend. It makes that pop of color that you were looking for in your design plans. Wallpaper can even make a statement with your personality.

Finally, another interesting fact about wallpaper trends is that you don’t have to glue it. Well you can if you want to because that is still an option. Manufacturers these days are now creating removable peel and stick wallpaper. How cool is that? In fact, this is a great option for those leery of commitment in designing. Thus, you can remove it at any time to change the design without ruining your walls.
