Storm-Proofing Homes: Preparing for Summer Weather Events by Chafin Communities

When we think of summer, we usually think about sunshine and good times, but there are severe weather conditions to look out for as well. The summer season can bring thunderstorms, hurricanes, flash floods, and tornadoes along with it. These significant storms can cause damage to your home, so it’s always best to be one step ahead. While we can’t control the weather, we can do our best to prepare.

Make Sure you’re Covered

A good start to staying protected is to ensure that if a natural disaster or severe weather event were to occur, you would be covered by insurance. Review your insurance policies to see what you are covered for and determine if there are any gaps in coverage. You may want to consider adding coverage for flooding if you are in an area prone to flooding,  as it is usually not already included in your homeowner’s insurance.

Roof Maintenance

Your roof will likely bear the brunt of the storms you face. For that reason, you should make sure that it is strong enough to withstand any upcoming weather events. Check for any preexisting damage to your roof, such as missing or loose shingles. If there is damage, be sure to repair it before heavy rainfall, as you may suffer from water damage later. Furthermore, it is recommended that you clear gutters and downspouts for proper water drainage, which will come in handy during heavy rainfall as well.

Seal Windows and Doors

When you are in your home, you should be protected from the elements outside. You shouldn’t have to worry about feeling the wind or water from inside your home. In an effort to stay completely dry, make sure that all your windows and doors are sealed. If water seeps in, you could be facing flooding and mold growth down the road.

Trim Trees

Strong winds can pose a threat to the safety of your home if precautions are not taken. Be sure to keep an eye out for dead or weak branches near your home, as they are prone to falling and damaging your home. In general, any loose yard debris, trees, or lawn furniture that may fall should be secured to eliminate potential risks.

Emergency Kit Prep

It never hurts to be prepared. Having an emergency kit ready will help you weather the storms if necessary. You never know when you may lose power or you may have to hunker down for a while at home. When building your kit you may consider including a flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit. It is also beneficial to have an extra supply of blankets, bottled water, and canned or non-perishable food.

Seasonal storms are not to be feared, but it is helpful to be ready if and when they occur. As we know, the weather is sometimes unpredictable, but that does not mean we have to be caught off guard. Preparing today can save you from stress and headaches tomorrow. We encourage you to follow these tips, so you feel safe and protected in your home this season and all those to come.
